By protecting Jews, Casper and his family, Corrie and Betsie, risked their lives ("History"). In order to keep the Jews in their house they would have to have a place to hide them if they were searched by the gestapos. Usually there were up to 6-7 people living in the ten Boom household. So they had someone build a hidden place that was connected to Corrie's room. The room was built by Mr. Smit. The secret room was 30in deep and a small air vent to the outside(Simmons). The room had just a few things in it. It contained of: biscuits, vitamins, a jug of water, and 1 small, mattress. The materials used to build the fake wall were brought in by briefcases(simmons). The builder installed a buzzer system that could be heard all over the house. The buzzer would tell everyone in the house that Gestapos could enter the house at any moment. So the Jews would have to get to the Secret Room fast.
